Hams
in Space Has Prepared a New Deck!
For the first time in over five years, there
has been an update to the Hams In Space
presentation deck! Randy Schulze W0ICQ
writes,
Hams
in Space was an in depth presentation
which started out very small in 2010,
and evolved into a major production. The
Presentation Team consisted of Randy Schulze
– KD0HKD (now W0ICQ), Eddy Paul
– KY0F (SK), and Jeremy Widner –
AC0DX. Between 2010 and 2015, we provided
the presentation 45 times across Missouri,
Kansas, Nebraska, and Arkansas, including
twice for the National Hamvention in Dayton,
Ohio. At its peak, the presentation discussed
a wide selection of satellites, software,
radios, antennas, and accessories, and
was featured in the November 2014 edition
of CQ Amateur Radio Magazine. A number
of YouTube Videos were produced, and are
still viewed and commented on today!
Our
last “official” presentation
occurred on November 17, 2015 at the Raytown
Hamfest, not long after our second presentation
at Dayton. Since just about everyone had
seen our presentation, some more than
once, we opted to stop promoting the show,
and started working on ideas for a new
presentation on another topic.
This version of the presentation, while
based on the last full version, has been
edited down. While it focuses on only
one satellite, SO-50; the instructions
and process are basically the same. Some
of the hardware displayed may seem old,
but again the instructions can be applied
to newer radios, etc.
My
Dear Friend, Eddy Paul – KY0F passed
away unexpectedly in December 2019. This
presentation is dedicated to Eddy.
You can view a PDF version of the deck at:
http://hamsinspace.com/resource/Sat_Radio_7_1_1_Raytown.pdf
This
version of the presentation was prepared to
be presented at a meeting of the Raytown Amateur
Radio Club. When asked if Randy would take
the presentation on the road again he replied,
"I'm not making any promises, but I'd
consider it."
Hams
in Space Team Member KY0F-Eddy Paul SK
I'm
very sad to report that my dear friend,
KY0F-Eddy Paul passed away on December 18,
2019. Eddy and I, along with AC0DX - Jeremy
Widner worked together at Sprint back in
the 90's. We became fishing buddies, and
all became involved in Amateur Radio in
2009. Eddy was a member of the Radio Amateurs
of Johnson County, and worked part time
at Associated Radio in Overland Park, Kansas.
You
might recall Eddy as one of my partners
on the Hams in Space Presentation Team.
We traveled to radio club meetings and Hamfests
all over the Midwest, and were invited to
provide our presentation at the Dayton National
Hamvention on two occasions. Between fishing
and Hamfests, Eddy and I shared countless
miles on road trips to Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas,
Missouri, Arkansas, and Ohio.
He
was a kind gentle sole with an outstanding
sense of humor. Eddy enjoyed life with family,
friends, and he always caught his limit.
I'm
really, really going to miss him....

Hams
in Space Recognized by SATERN!
Randy and Eddy from the Hams in Space Team
were recently presented with Certificates
of Special Recognition after providing their
Hams in Space Presentation at their monthly
meeting in Olathe, Kansas on the evening
of May 11, 2015.
This
wasd a very fun presentation, and served
as a good "dress rehersal" before
our presentation at the Dayton National
Hamvention on May 16, 2015. Thanks SATERN,
this was unexpected, and a very nice gesture!

2015
is Shaping Up to be Another Big Year for
Hams in Space!
If you’re from the Kansas City Metro
Region, you’ve likely seen the Hams
in Space Presentation by KDØHKD Randy
Schulze, KYØF Eddy Paul, and ACØDX
Jeremy Widner at your local radio club meeting
or at one of the many fine hamfests in the
region. They’ve appeared in Missouri,
Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas, and Ohio
showing hams how easy and fun it is to get
on the air with Amateur Radio Satellites,
many times with equipment they may already
own. The message Hams in Space has been
giving is, “Keep it simple, and
have fun!”
We
can’t believe it, but we’ve
now been taking this dog and pony show to
all corners of the Midwest for going on
six years now! Hams in Space has appeared
in videos, and a feature article in the
November 2014 issue of CQ – Amateur
Radio Magazine. We’ve had the
honor and pleasure to work with two NASA
Astronauts during our presentations, and
have seen our work show up on web sites
from around the world!
Believe
it or not, while we’ve had a lot of
fun providing this presentation, we’ve
actually planned on not hitting the circuit
as hard, or at least not to advertise the
presentation as we’ve did in the past.
None the less, requests for the presentation
continue to arrive at our in box. So far,
we have the following requests for 2015:
-
-
Independence Emergency Operations Center, (Independence,
MO) 7:00 PM, April 9, 2015
- HMS Beagle Science Store, (Parkville, MO)
3:00 PM, April 12, 2015 http://hms-beagle.com/
- Metro KC Area SATERN, (Olathe, KS) 7:00
PM, May 11, 2015
- Dayton National Hamvention, (Dayton, OH)

The
Hams in Space Team looks forward to seeing
you at one of these venues!

Hams
in Space Present a Forum at the
National Hamvention at Dayton, Ohio
The
Hams in Space Team of KDØHKD - Randy
Schulze, KYØF – Eddy Paul,
and ACØDX – Jeremy Widner gave
their presentation on FM Amateur Radio Satellites
as a Forum at the Dayton Hamvention on May
16th before a full room of 159 hams in the
audiance. “We always hope for a good
turnout,” said Randy, “But this
exceeded our expectations!”
The team was surprised, and much honored
to have NASA Astronaut, Colonel Doug Wheelock
on hand to participate in the Hams in Space
Presentation. Many will recall Colonel Wheelock’s
time on the International Space Station
in 2010 when he made many contacts to amateur
radio operators around the world. Randy
mentioned that he and the Astronaut had
made contact during the very early morning
hours in 2010 while Randy was driving cross
country near Laramie, Wyoming when Colonel
Wheelock’s voice came booming over
the mobile unit that was scanning in the
truck. Colonel Wheelock also remembered
the contact with that mobile unit traveling
across Wyoming at Oh-Dark-Thirty!
The Hams in Space presentation focuses on
the FM Amateur Radio Satellites, demonstrating
how easy it is for Hams interested in working
satellites to get started, often with equipment
they might already have on hand. During
the presentation, an emphasis of ‘Keep
it simple, and Have Fun!’ is stressed
throughout. The audience was lively and
entertained, and asked many really good
questions, both during and after the presentation.
Looking
back since 2010, Hams in Space Team has
provided their presentation about thirty-eight
times to amateur radio club meetings and
hamfests in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas,
Nebraska, and Iowa; fine tuning and adjusting
the presentation into the product that is
presented today. “When we started
our presentations back then, there were
five, active FM Amateur Radio Satellites
that could be worked,” explains Randy,
“While there are launches and opportunities
coming in the future, at present there is
only one FM Amateur Radio Satellite, that
being SO-50, and on occasion the International
Space Station participates in making contacts
with the Amateur Radio Community.”
In spite of there being fewer satellites
to work, the Hams in Space presentation
continues to be in demand, and attracts
an interested audience wherever they appear.
While the Dayton Hamvention has been a pinnacle
for Hams in Space in providing presentations,
the team extends their appreciation to the
many organizations who have invited Hams
in Space to appear at their events and meetings
over the years. It’s the enthusiasm
shown by these audiences that keep Hams
in Space doing what they do!
L
to R: KY0F Eddy Paul, KD0HKD Randy Schulze,
Colonel, Doug Wheelock, and AC0DX Jeremy
Widner
“The
event staff at Dayton was outstanding, and
really made our team feel like we were special
guests; even going out of the way to show
us where we could find things we were looking
for, and making sure all the systems related
to the presentation such as computers, mics,
and PA Systems were up and working,”
says Randy. “They’ve been doing
this for quite a few years, and it shows!”

Jeremy Widner, ACØDX, and Randy Schulze,
KDØHKD, will appear at the ARRL
Midwest Division Convention,
Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9, in
Lebanon, Missouri. The Hams in Space presentation
explains how to successfully get on FM Amateur

operators typically already own. Their emphasis
is to “keep it simple” and “have
fun.” The “Hams in Space”
presentation will take place Saturday at
noon in Room A. A special guest will be
NASA Astronaut Steven
Nagel, N5RAW. A good pass of
SO-50 will fit into the schedule, and plans
call for one or two hands-on demonstrations,
weather permitting.

Hats
Off to the Bates County Amateur Radio Club!
Eddy,
KYØF and I returned from Adrian,
Missouri this afternoon after having an
excellent time at the Bates County Hamest
in Adrian, Missouri where we were made to
feel very welcome!
We
were there provide our Hams in Space Presentation
on working FM Amateur Radio Satellites to
a respectable size audience followed by
a hands-on demonstration in the parking
lot. Three hams who have never worked satellites
before tried their hand working a pass of
SO-50, which came over the southern horizon
in EM28 at about 12:11 PM-CDT. Between the
three of them, I believe they made seven
or eight successful contacts! (Thanks if
you were at the other end of any of these
QSOs!)
After
all was said and done, we learned from Kevin
Scrogham of the Bates County Amateur Radio
Club, that their club is a very new organization,
and that this was their very first attempt
at a hamfest. Well you could have fooled
me! Although small, this was a a very well
organized event held in a great venue. The
class room we used for our the presentation
was comfortable, well set up with tables,
chairs, and a screen and projector. It was
the perfect size! The hamfest itself was
in a large area with ample space for tables
and exhibits, while a concession was set
up with all the staple foods expected at
a morning hamfest. (As you know, biscuits
and gravy are to hams like doughnuts are
to cops!)
Adrian,
Missouri is about 45 miles, or just less
than an hour's drive south of the Kansas
City Metro Area. Based on the time of the
year, and their location, I expect the Bates
County Hamfest has the potential to become
one of THE prominent hamfests in
the region!
Keep
up the good work, guys! Our hats are off
to you!

The
Hams in Space Videos are Being Noticed in the UK!
The
Hams in Space Team, also known as the KC Satellite Team
consisting of Randy Schulze KDØHKD, Eddy Paul KYØF,
and Jeremy Widner KØPDX are the hams who have been
providing presentations on FM Amateur Radio Satellites
around the Midwest region. As many of you know, they have
started producing videos on various topics related to
the Amateur Radio Satellites, and have published them
on YouTube and on their web site, http://hamsinspace.com.
To our surprise, these videos have been noticed by Amateur
Radio Satellite Enthusiasts in England. The Southside
Amateur Radio Club in London who is well known for their
Amateur Radio News Website has published two articles
about the Hams in Space Videos, with the most recent article
at:
http://www.southgatearc.org/news/november2011/hams_in_space.htm
“While reviewing traffic statistics for the Hams
in Space website, I noticed a lot of activity being generated
from the UK’s Southgate Website referring “hits”
to our website,” said Randy. “I browsed over
to their news list, and sure enough, there was a story
about our videos. We’re flattered, and pretty excited!”

a Great Radio Season It Has Been!!!
Randy
- KDØHKD,
Eddy – KYØF,
and Jeremy – KØPDX
are still providing their Amateur Radio Satellite Presentation
for Hams interested in communication via the Amateur Radio
FM Satellites.
Eddy and I had an OUTSTANDING
time at the Joplin Hamfest on August 27, 2011!
They really know how to host an event, and they really made
us feel welcome!
We
had a very respectable turn out for our presentation that
morning, where we explained to the audience how we work
the FM Satellites. Later that morning, we had an even better
turn out in the parking lot where we hosted a hands-on demonstration
during an overhead pass of the SO-50 Satellite! This is
where we put HTs and antennas in the hands of those in attendance
to try working one of the birds for the first time. What
a success! Several of the participants told the hamfest
organizers that they were now "Hooked on Satellites!"
A
Tip of the Hat to all hams at the other end of the satellite
signal in North America who were there to make this demonstration
so successful! Thanks!
On
September 20, 2011, Eddy and Randy appeared
at the Southside Amateur Radio Club at Belton, Missouri
and provided a presentation on Amateur FM Radio Satellites
to a fun bunch of hams. Thanks for the Invitation!!!
October
6th through the 9th was our annual Fall Serving
of Fish and Ham at Bennett Spring State Park
in South-Central Missouri. This is where twice a year, (once
in the spring and once in the fall,) Randy - KDØHKD,
Jeremy - KØPDX,
and Eddy - KYØF,
and sometimes one or two other guys go Trout Fishing, and
bring all the ham radio toys along. From this Grid
Square: EM-37 location, we made plenty of HF contacts
around North America, as well as a number of Satellite Contacts,
including W5MPC, N8RO, ND9M, ACØRA,
W0HDB, W7JPI, N5ZNL, and WA5KBH. (Thanks Guys!)
While
in the neighborhood of Bennett Spring, we moved a tad bit
down the road that Saturday Evening to Nixa, Missouri,
(between Springfield and Branson,) where Randy, Jeremy,
and Eddy gave our presentation on Amateur FM Radio Satellites
to the Nixa Amateur Radio Club. We expect
to hear some of these active hams talking across the satellites
soon! I even purchased a NIXA ARC T-Shirt! Thanks,
we had a lot of fun at Nixa!
Next
up on our calendar, is a Satellite Presentation for Wyandotte
County RACES at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, October 18, 2011. This
presentation will be at:
7:00
PM, Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Wyandotte County Emergency Management Office
City Hall of Kansas City, Kansas
701 North 7th Street
Kansas City, Kansas 66101
We
hope to see you there!
Until
then, 73!

Here’s what others are saying about the Amateur
Radio Satellite Presentation:
“…I
wondered how in the world do those guys hit satellites?
Well they obviously needed additional radios for additional
bands, weird looking antennas with rotors (more than one),
etc, etc, etc. Not so, as I now see. Your presentation
shows how easy it can be.”
– Tom Klamt – KEØQL,
Bellevue, Nebraska
“Randy
started the evening by telling the group that they are
not experts. Well, you couldn't tell it. They kept our
group entertained for a solid hour talking about everything
from the type of satellites to the equipment needed
and the frequencies to work the "birds." If
your club hasn't had the chance to invite these folks
to come and do their presentation, you're passing up
a great opportunity. I highly recommend you put them

Here’s what others are saying about the Amateur
Radio Satellite Presentation:
“…I
wondered how in the world do those guys hit satellites? Well
they obviously needed additional radios for additional bands,
weird looking antennas with rotors (more than one), etc, etc,
etc. Not so, as I now see. Your presentation shows how easy
it can be.”
– Tom Klamt – KE0QL, Bellevue,
Nebraska
“Randy started the evening by telling the group
that they are not experts. Well, you couldn't tell it. They
kept our group entertained for a solid hour talking about
everything from the type of satellites to the equipment
needed and the frequencies to work the "birds."
If your club hasn't had the chance to invite these folks
to come and do their presentation, you're passing up a great
opportunity. I highly recommend you put them on your schedule.”
–
Corey Mesembrink – KC0YNS, Columbia, Missouri

in the United States, Canada, or Mexico. AMSAT has offered this

To
my surprise, I’m proud to also report that effective January
20, 2010, I am the 142nd radio operator from the United States
to be awarded the South African AMSAT
Communications Award in recognition of making over twenty-five
verified contacts via qualifying, Phase 2 Satellites. I was
not expecting this award, but am proud and honored to be receiving
it. This award has been offered in the US since November 15,
1995.

The
Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (as AMSAT is officially
known) was first formed in the District of Columbia in 1969
as an educational organization. Its goal was to foster Amateur
Radio's participation in space research and communication. AMSAT
was founded to continue the efforts, begun in 1961, by Project
OSCAR, a west coast USA-based group which built and launched
the very first Amateur Radio satellite, OSCAR, on December 12,
1961, barely four years after the launch of Russia's first Sputnik.
